Volvo XC60
Expected in 24th November 2010
Estimated price: Rs 35-38lakh
Design:
The sculpted lines are particularly clear when the XC60 is viewed from the side. The car's shoulders are exceptionally broad. The large wheels, the buldged wheel arches and the darker livery rocker add to the muscular effect, while the dynamic, flowing lines of the greenhouse combined with its daring roof contour impart a sporty coupe feel to the upper part of the car. The rear design is characterised by tail lamps with micro-optics and LED technology. The lamps, which distribute their light in a special way, enhance the characteristic "Volvo" design. The range of wheel rims has been extended with a new 18-inch version with six double spokes.
The interior is driver-oriented and has been ergonomically designed. The characteristic floating centre console gives a dynamic and sporty impression. The centre console is slightly angled towards the driver to enhance driver dynamics. The optional power tailgate can be opened automatically in three ways - via the remote control, by a button in the light panel or by opening the tailgate with the handle. The three-split (40/20/40) rear seat and backrest offer two separate seats with an armrest in the middle, or three seats with safety belts for each occupant. The seat cushions are fixed and the backrest(s) can be individually folded.
Mechanicals:
The Volvo XC60 should come with the D5 or the D3 engine. The new five-cylinder D3 is in principle the same engine as the well-established 2.4-litre diesel, but its displacement has been reduced with a shorter stroke to optimise fuel consumption. The injection system has a different type of piezoelectric fuel injector compared with the D5 engine. These injectors minimise consumption with exceptionally rapid and precise injection pulses under high pressure. This promotes extremely efficient combustion.
We expect Volvo to launch their new four-cylinder 2.0T GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine and produces a generous 203 hp, with 300 Nm of torque available from 1750 rpm.
The Volvo XC60 being a complete CBU, we expect it to have AWD as a standard fitment. All-Wheel Drive is an electronically controlled system that distributes engine power between the front and rear wheels quickly and automatically, depending on which wheel pair (front or rear wheels) has the best grip at the moment.
Competition:
The Volvo XC60 being a notch lower than the Volvo XC90 will compete with the likes of Nissan X-Trail, Freelander 2, Mitsubishi Montero and the Audi Q5. The Volvo could have an upper hand here, considering all the bells and whistles it comes loaded with and with the Volvo badge.
Overall Evaluation:
The Volvo XC60 will be great buying option. Considering the fact, that Volvo has been known for building some great cars and always known for its safety innovations.
